Senate rejects GOP plan cutting taxes, regulations (AP)

WASHINGTON ? A divided Senate has voted to kill a Republican plan that would cut income tax rates, repeal the new health care law and block or overturn dozens of environmental, labor and energy rules.

The 56-40 vote was mostly along party lines.

The plan had faced certain defeat in the Democratic-led Senate. But Republicans wanted to offer their vision for fixing the economy ? the main issue in the 2012 elections.

The GOP plan was offered as an amendment to a bill aimed at helping unemployed veterans find jobs and repealing a law that requires the government to withhold 3 percent of its payments to contractors.
