Canadian Lies in a Buffalo Hospital?Uninsured | Travel Insurance ...

The weekend story carried in the Hamilton Spectator about a young man hospitalized in Buffalo after being hit by a taxi while on his way to a Bills? football game is another illustration of what can happen when Canadians leave home without travel insurance. And it happens often.? Why?

In Mid-November, the London Free Press reported on a young girl, on vacation in Jamaica with her father, who had to rely on Canadian government assistance and public donations to get her home after suffering a stroke as she had no travel insurance.? Again, we ask why?

It?s not as if Canadians don?t often see such stories, or are unaware that once they leave the country their provincial health insurance plans don?t cover them to any extent, and it?s not because federal and provincial government agencies don?t warn Canadians not to leave the country without supplemental health insurance.

Yet According to an Ipsos Reid poll, almost half (44 percent) of young Canadians?18 to 34 years of age report that they have never or rarely taken out travel insurance on any trip they have made to the U.S. in the last two years.

Fortunately, more mature and elderly Canadians know better, and they do buy travel insurance to cover accidents or health emergencies that might arise while out of the country.

What makes?the sad situation of Canadians laid up in U.S. hospital beds running up huge medical bills even worse, is that it is often the innocent people back home who will set up charitable accounts and petition governments to bail out those who neglect to buy insurance and fall to the consequences.

The young Hamilton man, Robert Sitter, a long-time Bills? fan, was hit by a taxi on the way to the stadium and, up until last weekend, had been laid up in a Buffalo hospital in a coma for approximately two weeks.? According to the Spectator report he has subsequently opened his eyes and hopefully is on his way to some recovery.? But as of this writing he still can?t be transported to a hospital in Canada.

Will the hospitals charges for this case be horrendous?? Absolutely.? Because the care he requires is of the highest calibre, and the technology used will be the best available, and that costs.

What will the province of Ontario pay toward a bill that will likely run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars?? Maybe up to $400 a day for each day Mr. Sitter is in hospital.? If he had valid travel insurance, which covers unexpected medical emergencies and accidents, all of his bills and his transportation back to Ontario would likely have been covered.

With Canadians crossing the border in record numbers, to shop with the strong Canadian dollar, or just to attend sports events or visit relatives, travel insurance has never been more critical?and it is more available, through more sources, than ever before.

There is absolutely no excuse, none, for any Canadian leaving the country uninsured.? In Mr. Sitter?s case, the insurance for one overnight stay would likely have cost less than lunch at the Bill?s stadium.

All travel insurers advertising on this site meet TravelinsuranceFile?s acceptability criteria for out-of-country health benefits for Canadian residents and they represent most of the major insurers and underwriters in Canada. Most will offer coverage of pre-existing conditions that meet certain criteria. Speak with them, explore their products online, ask questions, and once you get the right answers, buy right online. And look for the 5 percent savings available for people who travel together.

How to create stunning paintings using physics alone

Joanna Carver, reporter

Think you need talent and training to become a painter? Just by exploiting the physics of paint, you can create eye-catching, abstract images.

"Accidental painting" was invented by muralist David Alfaro Siqueiros in 1936, but now Roberto Zenit and colleagues from the National Autonomous University of Mexico in Mexico City are reproducing the technique to investigate the fluid dynamics involved. Using a glass panel as their canvas, they observed how patterns emerge from spreading paint, as seen in this video. They used acrylic lacquers because they dry quickly, allowing a pattern to be preserved. "If paint dries too quickly, patterns won't emerge," says Zenit. "But if it takes too long, the paints will mix and the painting becomes a slab of grey."

Different colours of paint have different densities because of the pigments used, which results in pretty patterns when they interact. The team found that the bottom layer must be heavier and darker than the top one: for example, white on black creates an interesting effect whereas black on blue doesn't work.

Jackson Pollock, famous for his drip painting technique, was present when Siqueiros discovered the method. "It's very sure that he gathered some ideas from Siqueiros," says Sandra Zetina, Zenit's co-author.

The research was recently presented at the American Physical Society's Division of Fluid Dynamics conference in San Diego, California.

Bellator and ?TUF? to new nights: How your MMA-watching will be different in 2013

Your MMA watching schedule will look drastically different in 2013. You will be able to catch MMA from the UFC and Bellator on weeknights.

According to MMA Junkie, an advertisement in the next edition of UFC 360 (formerly the UFC magazine) said the next edition of the show will air on Tuesdays on FX. Chael Sonnen and UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones are the coaches for the next season. Currently, the show airs on Friday nights, and ratings have taken a nosedive. With a new night and two of their most popular fighters serving as coaches, the UFC is hoping to right the TUF ship.

Bellator announced Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal's debut will air on Jan. 17, a Thursday, according to MMA Fighting. There have also been reports that the promotion's first show on Spike will air on Jan. 10, but only the Jan. 17 date has been confirmed. This signals the promotion's move from Friday to Thursday nights.

The best part of this is that the two promotions won't be fighting for MMA fans' eyes. Tuesday nights are generally light on sports, so the UFC has a chance not just to have MMA fans tune in, but also to pick up new fans.

For Bellator, their season begins when the NFL is in playoffs. They won't have to compete with football on Thursday nights. The new night and the move to Spike -- and a widely available HD channel -- should help to get more eyes on the tournament-based promotion.

Will the night change affect how much you watch "The Ultimate Fighter" and Bellator? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Earliest Start To Flu Season in Nearly a Decade

Flu season has officially started, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Flu activity around the country is high enough that health officials announced today (Dec. 3) the season is under way. It's the earliest start to the season since the 2003-2004 flu season, excluding the 2009 pandemic, said Dr. Thomas Frieden, director of the CDC.

States in the southeast ? including Alabama, Mississippi, Texas and Louisiana ? are seeing particularly high rates of flu cases.

While the course of a flu season is always unpredictable, this year's early start and the specific strains circulating suggest "this could be a bad flu year," Frieden said.

Last year, flu season did not begin until late February, which was the latest start in 24 years.

The level of flu activity that health officials are seeing now is usually not seen until January.

Fortunately, the strains in this year's flu vaccine closely match the strains in circulation, Frieden said.

If you haven't been vaccinated yet, it's time to get your shot, Frieden said.

"Vaccination is by far the best tool we have to protect ourselves against flu," he said. About 37 percent of the U.S. population ages 6 months and older have been vaccinated so far, the CDC said.

Pass it on: Flu season has officially begun.

Russia, China urge North Korea to drop rocket launch plan

MOSCOW/BEIJING (Reuters) - Russia and China urged North Korea on Monday not to go ahead with a plan for its second rocket launch of 2012, with Moscow saying any such move would violate restrictions imposed by the U.N. Security Council.

North Korea's state news agency on Saturday announced the decision to launch another space satellite and reportedly told neighbors it would take a path similar to that planned for a failed rocket launch in April.

"We urgently appeal to the government (of North Korea) to reconsider the decision to launch a rocket," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

North Korea on Monday notified the U.N. shipping agency, the International Maritime Organization, about the launch, which was scheduled to take place between December 10 and December 22 at between 1600 and 2100 GMT.

Coordinates provided by Pyongyang showed the rocket's first stage drop-off would take place off the west coast of the Korean Peninsula and the second stage would occur off the Philippines - both stages nowhere near Japan.

Echoing its criticism of the April launch, Russia said North Korea had been warned not to ignore a U.N. Security Council resolution which "unambiguously prohibits (it) from launching rockets using ballistic technology".

China was not so direct in its criticism of North Korea, but urged "all sides" not to take any action that "worsens the problem".

"China believes that maintaining peace and stability on the Korean peninsula and in Northeast Asia accords with the interests of all sides and is the joint responsibility of all sides," Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei told reporters.

"In the present circumstances, we hope all sides can be calm and restrained and not take any moves to worsen the problem. China will remain in touch and coordinate with all sides."

In Washington, the U.S. State Department repeated its opposition to any launch.

"We condemn what we consider to be a highly provocative action that would threaten peace and stability in the region," State Department spokesman Mark Toner said.

ELECTION IN SOUTH

North Korea says its rockets are used to put satellites into orbit for peaceful purposes. Russia said in its statement North Korea would be allowed to exercise its right to peaceful activity in space only if the U.N.-imposed restrictions were lifted.

The State Department's Toner scoffed at suggestions that Pyongyang was genuinely interested in space exploration.

"We are under no illusions that they're somehow pursuing a space program; it's pretty clear what they're trying to do here," he told a news briefing.

The warnings come just weeks before South Korea's December 19 presidential election in which how to handle North Korea is a major campaign issue. The isolated North has for years tried to influence major events in the South by issuing propaganda or launching armed attacks.

North and South Korea have been technically at war since their 1950-53 conflict ended in a truce, not a peace treaty, and regional powers have for years been trying to rein in the North's nuclear program. North Korea carried out nuclear tests in 2006 and 2009.

Countries trying to stop North Korea's arms program believe it is using rocket launches to perfect technology to build a missile arsenal capable of delivering a nuclear warhead to the United States.

North Korea is under U.N. sanctions that ban trading in missile or nuclear technology that have driven its already dire economy deeper in trouble by cutting off what was once a lucrative source of hard cash.

Russia has often balanced criticism of the nuclear activities and missile launches of North Korea, a Soviet-era client state, with calls on other powers to refrain from belligerent actions against it, which Moscow says can be counterproductive.

Russia is a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council and is upset by any defiance of council resolutions. Past launches by Pyongyang have caused concern among Russians living near the country's border with North Korea.

Vatican unveils Pope's Twitter handle: @pontifex

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - The secret's out. Pope Benedict's new handle on Twitter will be @pontifex, beating out other contenders that had been considered to showcase the thoughts of one of the world's most visible leaders.

Benedict already has 1.2 billion "followers" in the standard sense of the word but next week he will have another type when he enters what for any 85-year old is the brave new world of Twitter.

The Vatican said on Monday that the pope will start tweeting on December 12.

"The handle is a good one. It means 'pope' and it also means 'bridge builder'," said Greg Burke, senior media advisor to the Vatican.

Among the other handles that Vatican officials had reportedly considered was @BenedictusPPXVI, but they opted for something that was linked to the office of the papacy.

But don't expect tweets about how the pope is feeling or which soccer team he is praying to win a derby.

The papal tweets will be spiritual, Burke told a news conference, and the pope will tweet when and how often he wants.

And, even though Benedict is not the kind of person who walks around with a Blackberry or iPad, Burke said "all the pope's tweets are the pope's words. Nobody is going to be putting words into his mouth."

The first papal tweets will be answers to questions sent to #askpontifex.

The tweets will be going out in Spanish, English, Italian, Portuguese, German, Polish, Arabic and French. Other languages will be added in the future.

Primarily the tweets will come from the contents of his weekly general audience, Sunday blessings and homilies on major Church holidays. They will also include reaction to major world events, such as natural disasters.

Benedict will be pushing the button on his first tweet himself on December 12 but in the future most will be written by aides and he will sign off on them.

But while the pope will be one of the world's most high-profile tweeters and have many followers, he will not be following anyone himself.

"This is the new market of ideas and the Church has to be there. We want to use any method to spread the message. It's cost-effective and not very labor intensive and it is aimed at young people," Burke said.

PELLETS OF WISDOM

The Vatican said precautions had been taken to make sure the pope's certified account is not hacked. Only one computer in the Vatican's secretariat of state will be used for the tweets.

Archbishop Claudio Maria Celli, head of the Vatican's communications commission, said while he himself was not a big twitter fan he understood its importance and its possibilities for the Church.

"Reducing the pope's message to 140 characters is definitely a challenge but we have seen that a profound thought can also be expressed in a brief Biblical passage," Celli said. "We can see this as sparks of truth or pellets of wisdom".

And are there any fears that it could create problems with a type of social media that generates so much discussion?

"I think the risk would be not to go there because you are afraid of going there. Then you would leave vacant a space that is important to spread the pope's teachings," said Monsignor Paul Tighe of the Vatican's communications commission.

The pope's Twitter page is designed in yellow and white - the colors of the Vatican, with a backdrop of the Vatican and his picture. It may change during different liturgical seasons of the year and when the pope is away from the Vatican on trips.

The pope, who still writes his speeches and books by hand, has given a qualified blessing to social networking.

In a document issued last year, he said the possibilities of new media and social networks offered "a great opportunity", but warned of the risks of depersonalization, alienation, self-indulgence, and the dangers of having more virtual friends than real ones.

In 2009, a new Vatican website, www.pope2you.net, went live, offering an application called "The pope meets you on Facebook", and another allowing the faithful to see the pontiff's speeches and messages on their iPhones or iPods.

The Vatican famously got egg on its face in 2009 when it was forced to admit that, if it had surfed the web more, it might have known that a traditionalist bishop whose excommunication was lifted had for years been a Holocaust denier.
